Head of School  Rob Moore:

We are pleased once again to be able to celebrate the fantastic achievements of our art, design and media students graduating this June. The shows reflect what wonderful talent and abilities that are nurtured at Hull School of Art and Design. It is a fitting finale to their studies here after another successful year for our students in national competitions in other public arenas. This is a difficult time to be entering the jobs market but our graduates leave with the vital specialist and transferable  skills necessary to succeed, and we wish them well in their creative futures

Throughout the academic year Hull School of Art & Design graduating students have achieved considerable successes within their particular disciplines. Recognition for student work comes in many different forms; whether that is features in trade press, successful submissions for public exhibitions, or competition awards. This year HSAD had to purchase a new display cabinet to showcase all the successful student awards.

Students from Hull School of Art & Design worked with the Museum Service on a number of projects across a wide variety of creative disciplines culminating with the Connect>Create Exhibition at Feren’s Art Gallery. The multimedia, multi-discipline show focusing thematically on “Culture Scene Investigation” and “Identification” proved popular with visitors to the city throughout the months of April and May.

The centerpiece, a 3D fine wire skull sculpture by Jak De Groot Foundation Degree in Art & Design in the Public Realm was used to inspire the arresting poster design created by the Graphic Design students.  BA Hons Interactive Media, Phil Shakesby exhibited his Look at Me project: an interactive multimedia platform exploring the history of Portraiture.  FD Textile design Katie Driscoll, Victoria Wright, Nicola Thompson, Hannah Winter, Helen Whitworth were involved in creating a textile based gallery for the multimedia showcase.  Games Design BA Hons. students created a “time travel” visual interpretation of the Grimston Sword (Hull and East Riding Museum)

Other achievements throughout the school include:

Students from the Foundation Degree in Art & Design in the Public Realm were involved in the Larkin 25 Toad projects which went around the world via the Clipper race.

From the BA Hons Illustration course, artist and designer Abbie Wright of the Tea and Crayons Collective has been featured in trade magazine titles Digital Artist, Digital Arts and also has an entry in Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration.

Diana Barret FD Textile Design (now BA Hons) was commended in the Hand and Lock Competition. Katy Bancroft and Samantha Wilson were equally commended for the Bradford Textiles Society Competition.

Students from the BA Hons Graphic Design travelled to Leeds College of Art for the Northern Educational Event, where they took advantage of the industry led workshops and networking opportunities offered by HSAD’s affiliation with the D. & A.D. University Network.

The Graphic Design students association with D & A.D. continues with the New Blood Graduate Exhibition, an International event where students will have the opportunity to access portfolio surgeries with Graphic Design and Advertising professionals.

The third year student designed and developed a Free educational Application for the Android platform. The Hull History Viewer allows users to download an audio visual tour of Hull’s historic past direct to their mobile phones, and reconnect in a new with forgotten buildings bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Blitz of 1941.

Also on show from the Public Realm department is the “Art Bike”, one of seven pieces created to reflect and represent the identities of different businesses within the city.
